Position: Development Officer, Technology

1. General Accountability
The Development Officer is responsible for providing development and technical skills within the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) to assist the growth of the IT initiatives within the Bio-Sciences and Technology Convergence Centre (BTCC). This individual must be able to work effectively with a number of stakeholders including Algoma University, private sector companies, other academic institutions and researchers as well as partner organizations including non-profits and industry associations.
One of the key focus areas for the Development Officer will be the ongoing support of the Algoma Games for Health initiative This will include developing business and marketing plans for the studio in conjunction with other staff members, Algoma University and other partners.
In addition, the Development Officer will be a hands-on resource to support the development of other IT projects including:
• Project brainstorming
• Project planning
• Partner coordination
• Funding proposal creation
• Project management (in some cases)
• Report writing (in some cases)
The Development Officer will interact with research, technical and managerial personnel in external partner organizations. The Development Officer will also be directly involved in identifying funding sources and developing funding applications.
The incumbent is expected to work at an advanced level and be creative and innovative in developing projects and partnerships. He/she will possess an excellent grasp of the various facets of the technology sector (ideally within the video gaming and/or health informatics sector). The Development Officer will use this knowledge to be proactive in developing initiatives with groups both inside and outside the University and in preparing various grant submissions.
2. Nature and Scope
The Development Officer of SSMIC is accountable to the Director of Development.
3. Specific Accountabilities
The Development Officer:
• Develops business plans and marketing strategy/plan documents
• Identifies grant opportunities for academia, private sector and non-profit partners
• Assists in project planning and project management
• Participates in the writing and development of grant applications.
• Works with a network of partners in the private, government and academic sectors in order to identify areas of collaboration.
• Completes status reports and updates for initial funding agencies (ex, FedNor and NOHFC).
• Understands current profile of research and other funding opportunities from available government, foundation and private sector sources.
• Supports private sector companies in their efforts to develop research and technology demonstration projects in the region.
Thinks broadly to attract local and global private sector partners to participate in local initiatives based on his/her understanding of business drivers.
