The Innovation Centres GIS Department Welcomes New GIS Business Development Manager

May 11, 2007: The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC)’s Community Geomatics Centre (CGC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ken Lee to the GIS Business Development Manager position. Ken will be working extensively with the CGC and private sector Geographic Information Systems (GIS) firms in the region to identify, drive, and close new business opportunities.

“There is tremendous growth potential within the GIS industry and we are pleased to welcome Ken to the Innovation Centre team,” said Tom Vair, Executive Director, SSMIC. “Ken brings a great deal of experience from both the Canadian and U.S. GIS markets and we look forward to working with him to expand opportunities in the region.”

With over 8 years of GIS and IT business development experience throughout North America, Ken holds an Honours Bachelor of Anthropology Degree from Saint Mary’s University and attended the post-graduate Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program at the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS).

Ken brings over 20 years of IT experience to the position, having worked with the United States Air Force, United States Department of State, and various other government agencies throughout Canada and the United States. He has experience in a broad range of fields including remote sensing, emergency response planning and IT solutions. Prior to his corporate Geomatics career, Ken worked as an archaeologist and a Federal consultant at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) on Global climatic change.

“One of the greatest challenges I have found in responding to GIS business development is access to trained, knowledgeable and enthusiastic personnel” said Ken. “The SSMIC’s Community Geomatics Centre and local private sector firms provide key resources that we will need to succeed in the lucrative GIS business niche market. With the Centre’s reputation for excellence in the fields of Municipal GIS and Healthcare, we look forward to expanding services with our partners across the continent and going global in the future.”
