Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre welcomes new Communications Manager

August 29, 2008:  The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mei Ling to the Communications Manager position.

 

“Mei will be a great addition to the team,” said Tom Vair, Executive Director, SSMIC, “Her enthusiasm and experience in communications, along with her personal interest in Web 2.0 technologies and social media make her an asset in leading our communications efforts.”

 

Mei brings six years of combined education and professional experience to the position.  She holds a Master of Arts degree in Professional Communication from The University of Western Sydney, a combined Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University and a post-graduate certificate in Corporate Communications from Seneca College.

 

“I am excited to work for the Innovation Centre and return to northern Ontario,” said Mei, who was born in Elliot Lake and raised in Brampton. “I am also thrilled to be a part of their vision to contributing to the economic development of Sault Ste. Marie through the development of the innovation sector and strengthening of businesses using IT.”

 

Prior to joining the Innovation Centre’s team, Mei worked and volunteered in communications and public relations for a variety of organizations including publicity firms, government and not-for-profit organizations.  Some of the places where she has worked include: Osteoporosis Canada Mississauga Chapter, DW Communications Inc., The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, The Ontario SPCA Peel Branch and the Regional Municipality of Peel.

The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre was founded in 1999 as a catalyst for economic development activities in the IT and knowledge based sectors in the Algoma District. It works closely with community partners to enhance and improve IT sector opportunities. 

 

The Innovation Centre is focused on three core areas: the operation of a business incubator to encourage the establishment and growth of technology start-ups; the provision of support services to the SME (Small to Medium Enterprise) IT community and the development of strategic markets such as the highly successful GIS project.  The Innovation Centre has developed and implemented an award-winning GIS product, which serves a number of municipal customers and is responsible for the growth of private sector GIS firms in the Algoma District.
