The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) was established in 1999 as a catalyst for growth in the Information Technology (IT) and knowledge-based sectors. By focusing on this critical economic growth engine, the SSMIC plays an important role in the future growth and prosperity of Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District. The SSMIC is focused on three core areas: business incubation, SME support services and market development projects.
The Technology Incubator provides an environment where entrepreneurs can focus on the important aspects of getting their business startup off the ground. The facility, located in the ICT building at Algoma University, provides experienced incubator staff who are focused on helping clients succeed. It also delivers a turnkey, state-of-the-art office environment that allows clients to plug into existing Internet, phone and fax services and provides a choice of office space or workstations along with meeting room facilities to suit business needs. Community mentors are also available to provide strategy advice and guidance to help ensure business success.
The SSMIC provides support services tailored to Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) to help grow the IT sector. Some of these services include: networking events, IT Awards, training workshops, distribution of bidding opportunities, and the operation of ITSSM.com – an on-line IT directory that helps create awareness and raise the profile of the region’s IT sector.
The SSMIC also works to develop strategic clusters in the IT sector by coordinating funding and developing partnerships that build on our communities’ strengths. A shining example of a market development project is the SSMIC GIS team. This group operates one of the most advanced municipal GIS implementations in Canada. The award-winning GIS implementation serves as a model for other communities. Based on this expertise, the SSMIC GIS team formed the Community Geomatics Centre (CGC) to work with other community groups and private sector players to advance the use and adoption of GIS.description
